Easy Craft Ideas

As you can see from the pictures above, these are all general crafts that do not require you to learn a skill or to be able to read a pattern.  All you need is the desire to make crafts, some yarn and general craft supplies

Oh My Goodness, There's So Many Kinds!

There are many different kinds of yarn and if you don't knit or crochet you might get flustered when you see all of them at the store.  You may think that yarn is yarn, but that's not true.  Every kind is used to make specific things.  For example, you wouldn't use fine yarn to make rugs because it isn't durable enough to hold up against all the wear and tear a rug gets.

Here's a little information to help you out when you go yarn shopping:

doilie
  • Super Fine Yarn (like fingering, sock, lace) is used to make things like socks, doilies, stuff for babies, lace, and delicate work.
Knit Baby Sweater

  • Fine (like Sport Weight and Baby Yarn) is used for things like sweaters, light throws, and baby wear.

Knit Girl Sweater

  • Light (such as DK, Light Worsted Yarn) can be used to make baby and light-weight adult clothing (for example, scarves).
knit mittens

  • Medium (like Worsted-Weight, Afghan, Aran) is used to make throws, clothing for adults, blankets, and outdoor wear.
Knit Rug

  • Bulky (such as Chunky, Craft, Rug) can be used to make hats, scarves, throws, rugs, jackets, and blankets.
Outdoor Knit

  • Super Bulky (like Bulky, Roving) is used to make heavy blankets and rugs, sweaters and scarves.

Before you buy any yarn stop and think what kind of yarn craft you are making.  If you wish to make a delicate ornament, buy super fine, fine, or light yarn instead of medium, bulky or super bulky yarn. Be sure to match the type of yarn you use to the Christmas craft you plan to make.  Doing that will ensure the best results for your finished product.

Repurpose Materials

But what if you would like to make a yarn craft and you can't get to a store or don't have the money to buy yarn?  Can you recycle materials to make your own instead of having to buy it?  Yes, you can.  You can make your own yarn with the following items:

  • fabric and linens
  • old clothing
  • twine and rope
  • plastic bags
  • VHS magnetic tape
  • panty hose and old socks

You can use Google to learn how to use all those things to make your own yarn.

Are you surprised that all those things can be used to make yarn?  Just remember that a little creativity and imagination can go a long way.  Sometimes you just need to think outside the box.

Whether you make your own yarn or buy it from the store, have fun using it to make your Christmas crafts.  For fun is what crafting and Christmas are all about.  Merry Christmas everybody!

Mittens, hats, scarves, and more.

Yarn can be used to make crafts galore.

Make it, buy it, gather some up,

the Christmas crafts frenzy is about to erupt.
